Radovljica is a town on an embankment above the deep gorge of the Sava river, a fortified settlement emerged already in the early Middle Ages. It grew around the market place near the church and castle in the characteristic layout house fronts facing the streets. The entire urban complex was bound by ramparts. The old 16th century appearance of the town has been preserved to a large extend, only the house facades have been partly renovated in the Baroque style. Lake Bohinj is at the edge of the Triglav National Park. Its views are breathtaking, especially on a clear day when the mountains are highly visible. 30 minute drive. Ljubljana is the capital of Slovenia. Its population is close to 300,000. It is a picturesque town with wonderful architecture, museums, art galleries, a medieval castle above the city, modern shops and the political, cultural, educational and economic center of the Republic. Portoro and Piran are the most popular tourist areas on the coast. In addition to the beach, Portoro contains many discos and restaurants. Bohinj and Bled lakes are the two pearls of the Slovene mountainous world, both hidden among magnificent Alps. Postojna has one of the largest and the most magnificent caves in the world. It is 27km long and over 2 million years old. It was discovered in 1818 and over 26 milions of people have visited the caves since. Ptuj is one of the oldest cities in Slovenia. It has one of the most beautiful castles in this part of Europe.
Castles - Slovenia once had over 1000 castles and was once known as the country of castles. Some of the nicest ones include the Bled castle, the Predjama castle, the Snenik castle, the Bogenšperk castle the Podsreda castle and the Celje castle.
Churches - Slovenia can also be considered a country with a large number of churches (over 3000). In fact, most villages in Slovenia boast their own local church. Many of these churches can be found in remote places such as in the mountains or in forests or close to lakes. Some of the most beautiful churches are the Church of St. John the Baptist at Bohinj, the church of the Holy Trinity at Hrastovlje, the Church of the Virgin Mary in Ptujska Gora, the Chapter Church of St. Nicholas in Novo Mesto, the Church of the Assumption at Nova Štifta near Ribnica and the Church of the Annunciation at Crnogrob near Škofja Loka. |
